Consistent service, reliable hosting

I've been using Smarthost for a while now, probably my third or fourth order with them. This time I picked up another NVMe SSD VPS. Just like before, the order process was straightforward and the server was provisioned quickly. It's that consistency that keeps me coming back. I know what to expect: good performance for the price and no unexpected downtime. Their support is responsive if I ever need them too, which is a big plus. It's nice to have a hosting provider you can rely on without much fuss.

Solid performance, minor hiccup

I recently signed up for an AMD Ryzen VPS, and for the most part, it's been performing really well. The speeds are great, and I've had no issues with uptime. The setup took a little longer than I expected, maybe a couple of hours, but once it was ready, everything was fine. It's a good value for the performance you get. I just wish the initial provisioning was a bit faster like some other providers I've used. Still, happy with the overall experience and the product itself.

Decent price for a KVM VPS

I was shopping around for a KVM VPS and Smarthost caught my eye because the prices looked pretty good compared to others. I ended up getting one of their Linux KVM VPS plans. It was a good deal, especially since I was looking to save some money. The setup was quick, and it's been performing fine for my small project. Definitely felt like I got my money's worth.

Good VPS, quick setup

I grabbed one of their Budget VPS plans last week. Setup was pretty fast, got the login details within an hour or so. Everything's been running smooth for what I need. No complaints, it just works.

Just got my SmartHost renewal invoice for the NVMe VPS, and the price jumped significantly. Anyone else seeing this? My promo pricing ended, I guess. Feeling a bit blindsided.

S Sneha22 1 month ago
Hmm, mine is due next month. I'll check my plan details. Thanks for the heads-up!

That's how they get ya. First month or first year is always cheaper. It's pretty standard practice in hosting, not just SmartHost. You gotta factor that in when you sign up.

True, but a heads-up would be nice. I saw a recurring discount mentioned somewhere, but never found it.

Yeah, same here. My Linux VPS renewal was almost 25% higher than the first year. Support said it was because the initial discount expired. Kinda sucks when you're expecting a consistent cost.

Mine increased too. I'm thinking of switching to a Budget VPS to save some cash, but not sure if the performance difference will be too big.

Did you try asking for a renewal discount? Sometimes they offer something if you push a little.

Thinking of moving my Windows app to a SmartHost Windows Server 2022 VPS. Currently on another provider and getting some lag spikes. Anyone using SmartHost for Windows apps and can share their experience with stability and performance?

R RohanM 1 week ago ✓ Best Answer
I'm running a couple of .NET apps on their Windows VPS, Server 2019 though. No major complaints about stability. Performance is decent for the price. I've got the KVM VPS plan with good RAM.

Good to know. Did you get the DDoS protection addon? Is it worth it?

I use their 2022 instance and it's pretty solid. Haven't had any real issues that weren't my own fault, haha.

I've heard good things about their AMD Ryzen VPS for raw performance, even for Windows. Might be worth checking out if your app is resource-intensive.

I moved a small accounting app from a shared host to a SmartHost Windows VPS last year. Setup was quick, like an hour or two. The difference in speed was night and day. Support helped with a few initial config questions too.

That's promising. How was the setup time for you? Their site says dedicated servers can be a few hours, not sure about VPS.

How long does it take to get a dedicated server set up? Need something kinda quick for a project kick-off next week.

K Kate 2 months ago
From what I remember, dedicated servers can take a bit, like a day or two to provision. It's not instant like a VPS.

Depends on what you order. A standard config usually isn't too bad, but if you ask for custom stuff, it's gonna take longer. I'd give them at least 24-48 hours just to be safe.

Anyone tried to upgrade their VPS plan after starting with a smaller one? Was it a pain or pretty smooth?

C Carly 1 month ago
I upgraded my RAM on a Linux VPS a few months back. It was pretty straightforward, just a support ticket and a quick reboot from what I remember.

Should be fine. Most hosting providers make it easy to scale up. Downsizing is usually the tricky part, but upgrading is standard.

Are these guys any good compared to like, DigitalOcean or Vultr? The prices seem way lower but I'm worried about performance.

N Noor Foster 2 months ago
They're definitely more budget-friendly. For pure raw performance on higher tiers, DO or Vultr might edge them out, but for the price, SmartHost is super solid, especially their NVMe stuff. Depends on your workload, really.

S Sam 2 months ago
I moved a few smaller projects from Vultr to SmartHost just to save some cash and honestly, for what I'm doing, I haven't noticed a huge difference. If you're on a tight budget, they're a strong contender.

Does smarthost do recurring discounts? Or are most of their coupon codes just for the first month?

E Emma F. 2 months ago
They totally do recurring ones! I got 20% off for life on my VPS when I signed up last year during a promo.

B Brett Beaumont 2 months ago
Yeah, some are first month only but they often have codes that apply for the whole service duration. Just gotta look for the 'recurring discount' in the fine print of the promo.

Hey, thinking about grabbing a VPS here. Anyone know if their NVMe storage is actually faster or is it just marketing hype? Thinking about a gaming server.

M Mia 1 month ago
Yeah it's legit. I run a pretty demanding app on one of their NVMe VPS and the disk I/O is really good. Definitely noticeable compared to older SSDs I've used elsewhere.
4
S Sarah T. 1 month ago
For a gaming server it'll make a difference for load times and stuff. Not like a crazy night and day but it's an upgrade for sure. Plus, they seem to focus on it, so you'd hope they're not skimping.

Do they take PayPal? Or just credit cards?

B Brett Foster 1 month ago
Pretty sure they take PayPal. I paid with it last time.

P Paula Romero 1 month ago
Yep, PayPal is an option. They have a few different payment methods actually, not just cards.
